Edinburgh Napier University to promote ties between Scotland and Iberamerica

28 May 2009

Edinburgh Napier University has entered an agreement with Abbey, part of the Santander Group to promote closer ties between Scotland and Iberamerica.

The agreement, which will be signed later today, will see the company provide financial support over the next three years for the recruitment of postgraduate students from the 11 countries operating in the scheme including Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Mexico. *

Under the terms of the agreement, Edinburgh Napier University students and staff will also be given the opportunity to apply for grants to study or conduct research in the countries covered by the scheme. Funding will also be available to support a PhD cross cultural research project as well as enterprise awards in the Business School’s Moffat Centre.

Luis Juste, Director UK and Portugal for Santander Universites said;

“As a business we are keen to promote collaboration between universites and encourage students to develop an international outlook as part of their studies.

“Since we launched the Santander Universities programme in 1996, we have awarded more than 14,660 scholarships a year to help promote research, study and cross cultural programmes.

“Scotland is an attractive destination to overseas students, and we hope that this programme will help cement cross cultural relationships and build partnerships for the future.”

As members of the Santander Universities network, Edinburgh Napier University will be able to establish direct links to over 700 participating universities, government organisations and educational institutions. The university has a strong international outlook having developed a number of existing partnerships across Europe and Asia. It also has the highest number of EU students (non UK) than any other mainland UK university.

Edinburgh Napier University Principal Professor Joan K Stringer, CBE said;

“Businesses operate in an increasingly global environment and it is important that universities reflect this. “We are proud to be a new member and partner in the Santander network of universities. It is a programme which fits strategically with our existing international credentials and aspirations in terms of providing opportunity to existing and potential students. We look forward to a long and successful working relationship.”
